Latest scam hitting Investors involves scammers applying for a loan in your name and then having you send it to their bank account!
We have received a large number of enquiries about “firms” offering a way out of peoples investments, in particular Carbon Credits.
The scam goes as follows.
Company calls and tells you a story how they can get you your money back that you paid for your carbon credits. (Heard that before!)
Company says that fees need to be paid (Heard that before!)
Company says that they are so confident of their ability to recover your money they will actually front the money for the fees themselves. (Hmmm that’s new…)
Money arrives in your account for the fees. (Didn’t think that would happen)
You are instructed to send it to a bank account of their choosing.
Then you don’t hear from them again! (Familiar story)
So where is the harm and how can they afford to do this?
In short, they are applying for a LOAN on your behalf which then gets paid into your account.
Convinced the firm is genuine, you then send that loan money to an account the scammers choose, leaving the loan company to chase you for that money and creating one big headache for you to sort out!
For this to work, the scammers must have a good amount of information on you, what they don’t have they may seek to obtain as part of the initial steps of this scam.
